What is a Wireless Charger?

Cell phones and smartphones have become an integral part of modern life. They make communication a lot easier for us and have simply revolutionized it. Whether we are on a trip around the world or just in the kiosk around the corner: Cell phones and smartphones make it possible to stay in contact with others non-stop.

This is also the reason why they are practically in continuous use. It would be all the more welcome if wireless charging of cell phones were soon possible across the board. Because nothing is more annoying than when your battery is empty, but you need your smartphone or when you have to deal with a mess of cables while charging.

Induction chargers for cell phones, smartphones, and other devices, therefore, have a good chance of becoming bestsellers in the future. Apart from the private sector, for example, hotels, airports, restaurants, or bars are conceivable areas of application.

Features to Consider Before Buying A Wireless Charger

  • The charging performance differs enormously between the models
  • Easy positioning and slip resistance
  • Heat development: Overheating can be dangerous
  • Noise and brightness development can be perceived as annoying
  • Practical additional parts: USB connection proves to be particularly useful

Reviews of Samsung Qi Certified Fast Wireless Charger

As you can imagine, the Samsung Qi Certified Fast Charger is designed to deliver fast charging to the company’s ever-growing list of smartphones leading the way for the next generation of wireless charging speeds. While fast charging will arguably soon be the norm across the industry at the moment, the market is quite segmented between phones that are late in the game of fast charging and those that are already here. Likewise, the market for Qi wireless chargers is also fragmented between those that only offer standard 5-watt charging, others that offer 5, 7.5 or 10-watt charging, and still others that only offer 7.5 fast charges and/or 10-watt super-fast charge. This device is part of the latter category.

The exact speed at which the device charges your Samsung will depend on the model you have. But some Samsung devices will easily go from 0 to 100% charge in under 2 hours. It’s quite remarkable and the kind of speed that threatens to double or at least match the speed of fast wired charging. To let you take full advantage of the amazing speeds offered by the Samsung Qi Certified Fast Charger, the company provides 2 pads for a very reasonable price. So, you can have one on the nightstand and one on your desk in the office. This way, you never have to put up with low battery levels at any time of the day or night.

Whether you have a slightly older iPhone or a brand new S9, the Anker Wireless Charger is here for you. It offers the option of charging your iPhone at the standard 5 watts frequency or hanging items up to 10 watts in the blink of an eye to charging your new Samsung S9. Fast charge mode is advertised as 2X faster than previous chargers. But in fact, it turned out to be 2.5 times faster on the devices we tested. While the single-coil design is not ideal, if you place your phone correctly you shouldn’t have any issues.

The Anker 10-Watt Charger features a non-slip surface that is essential for bedside chargers, a compact design that doesn’t take over your nightstand, and built-in safety features like temperature control, protection against short circuit and over-voltage, etc. And it charges through all types of smartphone cases, except of course those made of aluminum or other metals. There’s an LED status indicator, a wall adapter for quick mode, and the whole wireless pad fits in the palm of your hand. There’s a lot to like here, including the rubberized feet that hold the charger in place and the price. Our handy guide to the best solar phone chargers features more great products like this.

The Belkin Boost Up Wireless 7.5-watt charger offers fast charging capability for all compatible handsets. There is a simple red/green indicator that tells you if your phone is positioned correctly, it will work with cases up to 3mm thick (but not metal) and charge any high-end Samsung phones newer as well as the iPhone 8, 8 plus, and X. There is a rubber ring to hold the phone in place on the block and rubber footpads to keep it on the nightstand.

In our humble opinion, this is one of the prettiest wireless chargers around. Sleek and clean, no-frills. Fast charging is very good to excellent, although charging times vary from device to device. It is universally compatible with Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG, and other smartphones and tablets, and Belkin engineers are said to have spent a lot of time making the device iPhone-friendly, which it certainly is. With the fanless operation, thermal protection, an extra-long 5ft mini USB cable, and foreign object detection, the Belkin Boost Up justifies its slightly above-average price and is our Premium Pick.

Reviews of Mophie Qi Wireless Charging Pad – Apple Optimized

The Mophie Qi wireless charging pad shares many features of the Belkin Boost Up. It is a 7.5-watt fast charger, it is compatible with a wide range of today’s best handsets, it has the rubber ring on the top to keep your phone in place and the rubber feet for keeping the pad in place on your nightstand and extra thought and care has been given to optimizing the device for the iPhone 8, 8 plus and X. The result is a reliable, quiet, and convenient charger that charges your iPhone 50 % faster than the standard 5 watts and get your S9 through the end chain in about 2 hours.

Unlike some wireless charging pads which take a moment to think things over after you put the phone on top of them, the Mophie starts charging as soon as the phone is properly seated. In the long run, it won’t change much to the overall charge time, but for us, it’s a sign of more thinking in engineering. An LED indicator lights up when the phone is fully charged. It consumes virtually no power when not charged and allows detection of foreign objects (translation: metal detection) if you put a phone with a metal casing, or even partially metal in it. The only reason it didn’t hook our Premium Pick is that while engineering is the top pick, he’s not going to win a beauty pageant. Reviews of Belkin Boost Up Qi Belkin Wireless Charging Pad

The Belkin 5-Watt Boost Up is the little brother of their fast-charging 7.5-watt wireless pad. It’s designed strictly for standard charging, so while you can use it on your S9, don’t expect to go 0-100% in 90 minutes like you would with a 10-watt charger. This will take more than 4 hours. But hey, if you sleep, what difference does it make? The justifications for purchasing a 5-watt charger are less and less as more and more phones, especially iPhones, come online that are capable of accepting fast charging. But then again, since most people charge their phones while they’re asleep, maybe it’s the fast chargers that have to justify their existence.

That said, Belkin produced another design winner here and that sleek and sophisticated profile alone might be enough to tip some people into the “buy” column, 4 hours or more of charge time or not. It is equipped with an extra-long cord with the power adapter, it charges through non-metallic cases up to 3mm thick, it is compatible with virtually all Qi-enabled devices and it is backed by a warranty of 3 years. And these are all good reasons to choose one.

Reviews of Google Pixel 3 wireless charger

If you have a Pixel or Pixel 3 smartphone, Google has a wireless charger for you. Designed first and foremost as an accompaniment for corporate handsets, the Google Wireless Charger enables blazing 10-watt charging speeds while keeping your phone upright, so you always know what’s going on. So, this is another plug and play charger for home and office. Just don’t expect to get those fast 10-speed 10-watt charging lights if you have an S9, because Google, in their endless wisdom, designed the device for fast charging of Pixel handsets only. All others are relegated to standard charging speeds.

While it is certainly their right to restrict which devices can enjoy fast charging and which do not, this unfortunate fact certainly puts a fence around the market for this device. But if Big G is willing to live with it, who are we to blame them? The point is, if you have a Pixel, now you have a way to charge it quickly and reliably. You can also enjoy your favorite photos while your phone is charging, as the device doubles as a photo frame. This also makes an amazing electronic gift for your loved ones.

Wireless Chargers FAQ

FAQ’s for Best Wireless Chargers 2020

This is one of the most common questions people ask themselves when considering purchasing a wireless charger. And it is a good one. The answer to the question of whether the wireless charger will work with your phone case is, "It depends". Qi is by far the most popular type of wireless charging, and it works using magnetic induction coils, a transmitter, and a receiver. If your phone's case is plastic (like most are), it shouldn't conflict with this system. The phone should charge just fine. If, however, your phone case is made of some type of metal, it is almost certain that the metal will interfere with the transmitter. And it doesn't take a lot of metal to interfere.
In most cases, at the time of this writing, wired charging will be faster than wireless charging. But that should change soon. Also, there are currently wireless chargers and Qi-enabled phones that support super-fast wireless charging. It is just that it is not that widespread yet. In truth, however, the speed issue is not much of an issue. Or at least it should not be. Since most people charge their phones while they sleep. So, whether it takes 1 hour or 4 hours does not matter.
Induction charging - which is the basis of the Qi standard - is the most common type of wireless charging currently available. It generates a weak electromagnetic field which extends only a short distance from the charging cradle. There are no known safety issues with this type of load. Electric toothbrushes and other forms of home technology have been using induction charging for several years without incident. Inductive charging can be safer than plugging in since there are no exposed electrical connectors involved in the process, which reduces the risk of shocks and short circuits. So, you can sleep well knowing that your Qi wireless charger is safe for you or your loved ones.
This is another question that comes up all the time. It's only natural for people to put 2 and 2 together and start thinking, "If I set my phone on the charging cradle to absorb the power, where does the charging cradle get the power? that I consume? If you read the "key features" above, you have probably noticed that a good number of charges come with 3- or 5-foot USB charging cables. These are the cables that plug into the wall outlet and power supply to provide power. Most of them are quite short because they are meant to be plugged into the outlet next to the bed. So why are they called "wireless" chargers? They are “wireless” because you do not need to extend a wire from your phone to the notebook or wall to charge it. Just put your phone on the notepad and it will charge. The only type of fully wireless charging is provided by mobile and wireless power bank. But even then, at some point, you will have to plug in the power bank to recharge it.
You can do it. But this is not always the most convenient thing to do. Today, some cars come with Qi charging stations as an option as standard. Unfortunately, most of these Qi stations are located below eye level, in the center console between the chairs. It is therefore difficult to monitor and answer the phone while driving. (In fact, you should not watch or answer the phone while driving, although a lot of people do.) If you don't like having the phone down and out of sight while driving, there are several different wireless charging stations available for cars that allow you to mount the phone higher on the front or even the top of the dashboard. But that is a list for another day.
No. There is no proof that the best wireless chargers will damage your battery. One thing that is known to shorten the life of a lithium-ion battery is to keep it fully charged all the time. Or let it drain to almost zero before plugging it back in. Ideally, you should let the battery drain to around 50%, then charge it to 90 or 95%, with occasional 100% charges. Why? It is linked to the operation of the lithium-ion battery. And the fact that the more the battery is charged, the more quickly the electrolytes in the battery degraded. The full scientific explanation would take a few pages, but that is the gist. So, if you want to preserve your battery, do not keep it fully charged all the time or let it drain to zero.
As we mentioned above, the Qi charging standard is based on induction charging, which uses a weak electromagnetic field to charge the phone's battery. Rigorous scientific testing has not revealed any health or safety risk associated with this type of load. The answer is, therefore "Yes, recharging the Qi is perfectly safe".

Conclusion & Caveman’s Pick

We have discussed what is crossbow and how does it work. There are too many products in the market, but it is very difficult for someone to choose the right product. That’s why we have narrow it down to only 10 products by doing our research and experimentation.

All of the products mentioned above are great. They have minor differences. Each of the products is best in its category. But if you want an allrounder then Yootech Wireless Charger is best.  It provides 3 different power settings for different makes and models. From 5 watts as standard to 10 watts super-fast for some Samsung models. The Yootech Wireless Charger lets you charge most of today’s most popular case materials and has no sleep killing, always on the LED lights that will keep you awake at night.

What is a Qi charger?

A Qi charger is a charger for smartphones and other small devices that uses induction to transmit electricity wirelessly. So-called induction coils are used, which can transmit energy via an electric field. With Qi chargers, it is, among other things, an advantage if several of these coils have been installed. This makes handling easier, since the device is recognized faster, and the exact placement is no longer necessary. However, wireless charging varies in speed, which is why the power level of the charger is important when buying.

Otherwise, Qi chargers are usually offered in a flat form or as a stand-alone device – special forms are, for example, Qi holders for the car or Qi power banks. In principle, models from well-known manufacturers are usually the better choice, as they usually belong to the more sophisticated Qi chargers. Some have also been specially designed for certain cell phone models. The currently common power levels for a Qi charger are 5W – 7.5W – 10W. Modern forms support all three modes and choose the right performance depending on the phone model. However, they are usually not exactly one of the cheap Qi chargers on the market.

Purchase advice: This is what counts with Qi chargers

1. The charging performance differs enormously between the models

Qi chargers charge more slowly than traditional chargers. The annoying mess of cables is no longer necessary, and the wireless charger enables recharging anytime, anywhere.

However, the products differ enormously in terms of their charging capacity. Some only charge 24 percent of the battery per hour, better models manage over 40 percent.

It is also important to note whether the Qi charger switches itself off again after 100 percent charging. Therefore, pay attention to how strong the charging power is.

2. Easy positioning and slip resistance

Many models are supplied with a rubber ring and three coils, making the phone slip-proof. They allow easy positioning on the charging pad, which is practical and suitable for everyday use.

Therefore, when buying, pay attention to the construction of the model and whether it is practical in everyday life.  In any case, the support surface must be large enough to avoid possible damage or slipping down.

3. Heat development: Overheating can be dangerous

There are also very large differences between providers in terms of heat development. If a wireless charger gets so hot during charging that it has to be switched off, this is of course not recommended. The heat development must be tolerable.

Some devices don’t even get lukewarm, others overheat completely and can even become a source of danger in this way. The latter is especially true for many non-certified low-cost providers, which should be avoided. It is best not to leave your smartphone, tablet, or mobile phone charging unattended via induction.

4. Noise and brightness development can be perceived as annoying

Humming, humming, whistling and other loud noises can be very annoying when charging wirelessly. This is especially true at night. Therefore, check whether the Qi technology you have chosen works quietly. Some models are practically noiseless during inductive charging, while others are rather loud.

The same applies to the LED display. If this is very bright, this can also be a problem. On the other hand, an LED display is useful as it shows you how far the device has been charged.

5. Practical additional parts: USB connection proves to be particularly useful

With some Qi charging stations, the power supply unit, cable, and charging case are included, with others not. When buying, therefore, make sure that everything is included that you need for your charger without a cable.

Even a cheap model becomes expensive if you have to purchase all possible additional supplies separately.

You can also make sure that the device also has a USB adapter.

So, you can charge two smartphones at the same time, which is very convenient. Using the Qi charger in the car can also be useful, but you need a suitable adapter for this.

Important features of a good Qi charger:

  • fast charging performance with inductive charging stations with fast charging function
  • Slip resistance and easy positioning
  • low heat development
  • Low noise, not too bright
  • if possible, with a USB connection

Finally, the most important distinguishing features between the categories of higher-priced chargers and the very cheap alternatives should be briefly presented:

Medium to high price segment

  • good to very good charging performance
  • certified safety standards
  • Accessories such as USB or car adapters are available
  • from around 40 to 50 euros

Cheap models

  • available from around 10 to 15 euros
  • some devices have acceptable charging times
  • often no security certificate available
  • Guarantee & warranty questionable

Advantages and disadvantages of Qi chargers

There are different types of Qi chargers: power packs (220 volts), car plugs, and types with a USB connection.  There are also versions integrated into furniture (for example from Ikea). There are also differences in the following points:

  • Some models only charge and switch off at 100 percent. Others work with conservation of charge.
  • Power: The Qi 1.0 works with 5 watts, the Qi 1.2 to 15 watts.
  • The inductive charging stations contain a different number of coils: with three coils, for example, the cell phone can slip, one coil still hits, and the cell phone can charge.
  • The coils have different designs: They are either oval, rectangular, or bifilar wound.
  • The efficiency can be different: This means that the power loss is converted into heat.
  • Some models have foreign object detection, while others do not: that is, the receiver reports the power received. The Qi charger can thus detect losses and prevent metal objects from heating up due to induced eddy currents.

Compared to conventional charging cables or power banks, the Qi models have both some advantages and certain disadvantages

Advantages

  • Smartphone only has to be put on, there is no tangled cable
  • Charging is possible anytime, anywhere
  • no wear on plug contacts
  • Induction chargers are standardized, there are no compatibility problems
  • Supply of different devices at the same time

Disadvantages

  • currently still quite high charging times for inductive charging
  • Simultaneous charging and operation not possible because the device has to be on the charging station
  • Qi chargers are not yet included as standard in the smartphone delivery but must be purchased

You should pay attention to this when buying a Qi charger

For the wireless charging of the battery to work as well as possible, you should pay attention to a few things during the charging process and especially when purchasing the induction charger.

The number of coils: The more coils the Qi charging station has, the less you have to pay attention to the exact alignment of the end device on the charger and the faster the battery charges.

Wattage: Most Qi chargers charge with 5 watts (5V / 1A). In comparison, the conventional charger from Apple transmits at 12 watts, so wireless charging is generally slower. When buying, it is, therefore, advisable to keep an eye on whether the charger enables fast charging, which can be charged with up to 15 watts.

Support surface: Of course, it should be ensured during charging that the smartphone or tablet rests securely on the wireless charger and cannot slip away. Many manufacturers offer a non-slip surface for this so that no damage can be caused by falling.

LED display: An LED light in the Qi charger can be helpful to get information about the charging process. For example, if the smartphone is not correctly positioned on the surface, charging cannot start. If the LED does not light up or if it flashes, the user knows immediately. However, when charging is complete, this can also be indicated by the LED.

Compatibility: It is of course important that the charger and the device to be charged both have the Qi standard, otherwise wireless charging is not possible.
